Rev. Joy Wilson Writes...
The Pearl
There was a Japanese family, who, for generations had been pearl divers. Many of the pearls that they harvested over the years looked absolutely perfect, but the expert eye would pick out the faults. A speck here, a dent there, too oblong; and so on.
During their internment the pearl was hidden. But when they were released, the family knew the time had come for them to sell the treasure. It was valued, put up for sale, and a buyer found. But on the day the buyer came to pick up the pearl, the father of the house explained that they had changed their minds; they would keep the pearl, because it was beyond price; no amount of money could make up for the costly death of their son!
We sometimes take the Bible for granted, but we are told that the Word of God is a pearl of great price, and we should be prepared to go to extreme lengths to preserve it, and to pass it on. We hold that precious treasure in our hands now. We are the generation to whom it has been entrusted at this moment in time. Do we value it enough? Do we really take on board that Jesus was prepared to die, and did die, so that we might have this treasure?

Then one day the eldest son of the family found an unusually rich oyster bed. On one of his dives to this amazing site, he stayed down too long and soon afterward died.
But he had brought up with him an oyster containing the most perfect pearl the family had ever seen. At last they had obtained their pearl of great value, but it had cost them a son. Soon after, the family emigrated to the United States, and then World War II broke out.
