Stanley Lucas reached the grand age of 110 on Friday 15th January 2010.  Below is a short resume of his life and achievements - so far!

 

Stan (as he likes to be known), is a well-loved character and

lives in Bude. He was born at Rectory Farm, Morwenstow, north

Cornwall.  Born into a farming family, Stanley had two brothers

and two sisters.  The family moved to Great Beer Farm close to

the Cornwall/Devon border at Marhamchurch  in 1908.  He

attended the local village school until he was 14 when he began

his faring career on his father’s farm. He married Ivy Nancekivell

at Whitstone Methodist Church in 1926 and took over running the

family farm at Great Beer enjoying a happily married life for 40

years until in 1963 his wife passed away.

 

Stan was the co-founder of Stratton Young Farmers Club  in 1937

And was well known for his breeding of Devon Cattle and Devon

Long-Wool sheep.  He judged on two occasions at the Royal

Smithfield Agricultural Show in London.  In 1943 Stanley started a

dairy herd and was the first in the area to produce Tuberculin tested

milk.  20 years later, in 1963 he was President of the Holsworthy &

Stratton Agricultural Association.

 

In 1948 ill health  He and the family sold Great Beer and moved to

White Gates in Poughill where he lived next door to the Methodist

Chapel until 2007 when he took up residence at St. Hilary’s Home in

Bude.  Stanley was a Circuit Steward in the Bude Circuit between 1960 - 1964, a member of Bude-Stratton Town Council between 1959 - 1970 chairing many committees and was a Vice Chairman of the Council.  He assisted when Poughill successfully entered the Best Kept Village Competition and became Chairman of Poughill Revel & Cuckoo Fair, a popular annual event which is still going strong today.  80 years after leaving the village school at Marhamchurch Stanley returned to open the new school in 1995 jointly with the then youngest pupil, Anthony Heywood.

Stan has always been a keen sportsman and remains a supporter of Plymouth Argyle.  He used to play at Bridgerule AFC with his two brothers.  Stan began playing Bowls in 1950.  He went on to play at County level as Captain of the Club when they represented Cornwall at Worthing in the English National Finals.  He played until reaching a 100 years of age!
